Through the morning mist
The headlights shine, lighting up
the dull grey highway
Through the morning mist
The headlights shine, lighting up
the dull grey highway
All of the miles bleed
Into one road,
Red and blue lines
Spiderweb out
Like veins and arteries,
Across the screen
Directing me out
To the distant limbs
Of the city
And back again,
To your beating heart,
Quaking against me
As I fall asleep,
To wake again,
The quiet streets shaking off the night
And pulsing to life.
Listening to songs
About going home, on the highway,
And singing along
Driving past strip malls,
After the morning rush hour,
Windows down- a cool breeze
Everybody slows
the wreck, crumpled, smoking, still
curiosity rolls past tragedy
Morning, shrouded in mist,
the starter turns over, a rumble
tires on a wet road
